I was brought in to carry out the design work for a new venue called Vanilla bar that opened in Bristol. They’d already had the logo created but asked me to design all their other marketing and develop their brand identity. As part of creating a brand for them, I developed a specific illustration style for all their products.
The brief was to create illustrations that tied in with ‘vanilla’, the name of the bar. The idea or concept was to show their drinks supported or hanging from vanilla vines. I also used the vines to highlight different headings or sections of the menus and to break up the content on their fliers, posters and other designs. Another element they wanted illustrated were venus flytrap heads along with variations of the vines to highlight and differentiate particular products.
All the illustrations were created from scratch except for the actual vanilla flower, which was purchased as a stock vector to save time. When I was illustrating the drinks, I started off by creating a standard shot glass with reflections, highlights and shadows to create a sense of depth and a light source for the rest of the designs. After the initial glass was created I then modified it to suit the different shapes of bottles and glasses that were applicable for each drink. This meant that they all fitted together and matched the style which was initially developed.
I produced all the product illustrations and layouts for their fliers, posters, loyalty cards, stickers and menu designs following the guidelines setup earlier on in the project.
