Afternoon Silhouettes album cover design
I had loads of fun working with Samuel on his ‘Afternoon Silhouettes’ album cover. It incorporated a lot of photo editing, retouching and typography. He had created such beautiful music, that I was under pressure to produce artwork that would do it justice.
Luckily he already had some awesome photographs that I was able to use as part of the album artwork. These needed some retouching to get them to work well on the cover artwork, but it’s always great to have a strong basis to build on.
CD Cover Template
I always advise musicians or artists to contact their printers, to go through options of what they can do with the cover. Knowing the possibilities of what can be achieved and ensuring that it is within budget, can open often inspire the finished product. I always strive to create the best possible designs, within budget.
The style of cover is important to establish before starting any design work. This is because it will greatly influence the finished product and it allows me (the designer) to plan the artwork, to ensure it fits the printers template precisely. He settled on a simple a clean cover with a slot to hold the cd.
The Design Process
Samuel had a good idea of what he was after, so his initial brief explained what he wanted pretty well. After discussing the cover him, I began work on it and produced a few options for him to take a look at. Luckily I had understood his concept, so I got the idea right first time round.
We then worked on getting all the necessary copy/text into place. This required some tweaking of the photos, to allow the text to fit in with the imagery used on the cover. The photos used needed to be colour corrected and to have sections extended or darkened to accommodate the text, among other edits.
After going through a few iterations and trying out different fonts and text placements, we settled on the designs shown here. We are both really happy with how these came out.
I look forward to hearing his next album, and hopefully working on the designs for it too. 🙂
